BOONE FAMILY OF ROWEN, DAVIE, North Carolina NEWSPAPER ARTICLES

These articles are reprinted especially for the family of Charles C. Freeman.  The Introduction explains the relationship between the Freeman and Boone Families

Charles C. Freeman is a descendant of John Boone, Sr. (1727-1803) through his son, John Boone, Jr. (1781-1858).   John Boone, Sr. is the son of the immigrant Benjamin Maugridge Boone (1706-1762) and his first wife Ann Marie Farmer (1701-1727).

Ann Marie died at the birth of her son, John, Sr., leaving Benjamin to care for the infant.  Benjamin's older brother, Squire Boone, Sr. and his wife Sarah Morgan had two young children, but made room in their home for the orphaned baby.  Although Benjamin remarried, young John, Sr. continued to spend much of his time in the home of his Aunt Sarah and Uncle Squire.  When Squire and Sarah moved to North Carolina, John, Sr. followed them, and farmed property adjacent to theirs.  John Boone, Sr. was seven years older than his famous cousin Daniel (the 6th child of Squire and Sarah).  Daniel and John both married women named Rebecca Bryan.  Daniel's Rebecca (1739-1813) was the niece of John's Rebecca (1735-1820).

There is some controversy over the identity of John Sr.'s wife, but the autosomal DNA results for Charles clearly links him to the Bryan family, and thus supports the identity of John Sr.'s wife as Rebecca Bryan.

The following graphs are taken from the Ancestry Thrulines for Charles Freeman an illustrate his descent from the Boone and Bryan Families:

The following articles were written by Mocksville Enterprise editor and journalist, Gordon Tomlinson, working with Mocksville, N.C. historian, Louise Utley.  They were published in the Mocksville Enterprise during the summer of 1957.  The Introductory article shown below was published first.
